This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) provides basic and limited advanced emergency care and transport to patients accessing the EMS System under medical control authority. An AEMT possess the basic knowledge and skills necessary to care for patients in need and function as part of a team that link from scene care to the Emergency Health Care System. The AEMT should be able to:
- Demonstrate an awareness of abilities and limitations.
- Demonstrate the ability to relate to people.
- Have the capacity to make rational patient care decisions under stress.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Function as part of a comprehensive EMS system.
- Perform interventions with basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance.
- Perform limited advanced skills and pharmacologic interventions beyond the level of an EMT.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
- Understand basic human anatomy and body system physiology.
- Demonstrate knowledge of operational needs and utilization of resources.
- Perform comprehensive assessments of medical and trauma patients.
- Demonstrate proficiency of practical skills with the scope of practice required of an AEMT.
- Display sound clinical judgement based on assessment findings and history gathering.
QUALIFICATIONS:

COURSE PRE-REQUISITES:

- High School diploma or G.E.D
- Background Check/Family Care Registry
- 7-Panel Drug Screen (Negative within 6 months from start of class, may be subject to additional screening during course)
CLINICAL HOURS:
Student must complete all clinical time in addition to course work to receive a successful course completion.

CLINICAL PRE-REQUISITES:
- Copy of Driver’s License
- Immunizations
- Mantoux Tuberculin Skin Testing (TB Test)
- 2-step TB skin test: placements of test 1 and test 2 must be separated by at least 7 days; both tests must be within the last 12 months and Must be annually tested once every 12 months after initial 2 step testing or negative TB Blood Test (QFT or T-spot) must be completed within the last 12 months
- Hepatitis B Series
- In progress or verification of completion (series of 3- must have at least #2 prior to having patient contact)
- MMR
- Positive titer with date of test OR documentation of 2 immunizations (one after 1980)
- Varicella
- 2 vaccines one month apart OR positive titer
- Flu
- Exemption or annual documentation of vaccination
